Burnham Pavilions in Millennium Park
Promo-pavilion for the city of Żory
In the Polish city of Żory Nobel prize winner Otto Stern was born. What is known about this place? Now visitors of a city, tourists, investors, partners can find out it directly on entrance, in new pavilion under the bright name “FLAME”. The author of the project — OVO Grabczewscy Architekci.Fire festival
The city name, Żory means fire, a flame. For city building, it was necessary to burn wood, therefore such name. Traditions remain; in the summer the annual Festival of Fire here is held, on a city logo the small flame is represented. It is obvious, that the pavilion building should cause associations with fire. The building consists of three independent walls which are imposed against each other. Their composition and an external covering copper gives rise to set of reflexions. Inside concrete designs are left untouched, the floor is laid by a black stone.
In Pavilion two basic spaces. One — exhibition and the second — presentation. Under a glass floor the city breadboard model is located.Breadboard model of exhibition hall FLAME
UNEARTH turns Darkness Into Light
Ever since the mighty Unearth surfaced in the Heavy Music scene in 1998, they have kept delivering their global audience passionate music full of crushing riffs, and with highly energetic elements of chaos. With their fifth studio album titled "Darkness In the Light" (to be released July 5th in North America via Metal Blade Records), Unearth has proven once again that they sonically have it what it takes to keep flying the Heavy Music flag up high with pride and plenty of adrenaline.
Produced by Adam Dutkiewicz from Killswitch Engage and Times of Grace, who has produced their previous three records, and co-produced by guitarist Ken Susi. "Darkness In the Light" possesses Unearth's signature sound and at first glimpse what stands out the most are the vocals that Trevor Phipps laid down on tape. He sounds better than ever. This is what he had to say about the production of the record:
"We started writing last summer between tours. Buz and Ken write the riffs, then they bring them to practice and all approve or disapprove. We started writing the record with Derek Kerswill, we figured that it wasn't working out since he was looking for something more Rock N Roll friendly, and this band is looking to go even heavier than the last album. More extreme!"
Unearth is considered one of the pioneers of Nu-Metal along with Shadow's Fall and Killswitch Engage, and the three of them together helped to establish the Massachusetts Heavy Music scene! Today they are ready to unleash their beastly new album, and to hit the road. Unearth will be part of these years Rockstar Mayhem Festival, and then they will be heading to Europe. Since Unearth's former drummer Derek Kerswill left the band before the recording of the new album, the band will be joined by drummer Justin Foley from Killswitch Engage, who also recorded the drums on "Darkness In the Light". Here is what Foley had to say about this:
“I’m really looking forward to playing with some old friends, and spending a summer full of beers and breakdowns!"
We had a chance to interview Unearth's vocalist Trevor Phipps about the present and the future of Unearth. Here is what went down:

Hirshhorn Museum (Washington)
Hirshhorn Museum soon will cardinally change appearance, and without especial and cardinal changes. The New York architects from bureau Diller Scofidio + Renfro will add an existing complex with two easy structures in the form of blue spheres which will allow a museum to open additional spaces during a season. The sphere on a roof precisely reminds eggs on a museum of El Salvador of the Distance.
The Unusual Museum in Washington
In one of spheres the audience on 1,000 visual places will take places. Through transparent walls of a sphere spectators can enjoy not only a show, but also possibility to peep for the visitors of a museum walking on galleries. In the friend, a smaller sphere on the size there will be a cafe.
Estimated cost of realization of 5 million dollars, now the project is in a stage of study of the concept. Under plans, pavilions will open in 2011 year. However, if statements Fine Arts Commission) be required and National Capital Planning Commission, realization will be postponed for couple of years.

East Asia: 800-year-old Buddhist statue of 'goddess with thousand hands' restored to former glory
After four years of restoration, the Thousand-Hand Goddess of Mercy statue, which is regarded as the jewel of the Dazu Rock Carvings in Chongqing, will reopen to the public next month. An 800-year-old Buddhist statue will go on public display next month after
being restored to its former glory [Credit: Imaginechina]A team of heritage preservation experts inspected the work on Wednesday and announced that the project was complete.
"This repair work has tackled a series of technical challenges to preserve the cultural relic with modern scientific technologies and new materials to ensure the authenticity and integrity of the statue," said Huang Kezhong, the leader of the State Administration of Cultural Heritage Inspection Team.

was carved some 800 years ago [Credit: Imaginechina]The team has also suggested the local government should repair the Great Mercy Pavilion, which houses the statue, as soon as possible.
The Dazu Rock Carvings, 60 kilometers west of Chongqing, date to the Song (960-1279) and Ming (1368-1644) dynasties and comprise more than 5,000 statues. They were opened to Chinese visitors in 1961 and foreign visitors in 1980. The carvings were listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999.
Experts gathered in Dazu to see the statue's grand unveiling after
a four-year restoration project [Credit: Imaginechina]"They are remarkable for their aesthetic quality, their rich diversity of subject matter, secular and religious, and the light that they shed on everyday life during this period. They provide outstanding evidence of the harmonious synthesis of Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism," the citation said.
The statue of Kwan-yin in Baoding Mountain was carved about 800 years ago during the South Song Dynasty (1127-1276), with 830 hands in an area of 88 square meters in the hillside. It is 7.7 meters tall and 12.5 meters wide, featuring color painting and gold foil. It is the largest of its kind in China.

The work was led by the China Cultural Heritage Protection Research Institute. Experts from Dunhuang Research Academy, the Academy of Dazu Rock Carving, Peking University, Tsinghua University and China University of Geosciences also participated.

The project went through three phases from inspection, planning and the actual repair work. The team used X-ray and 3-D laser scanning to collect information needed to effect the restoration.
"We found 34 kinds of viruses on the sculpture that have greatly damaged the historical and artistic value of the carving," said Zhan Changfa, the chief scientist of the restoration project.
By 2007, one of the statue's many fingers had partly broken off and it had
developed moisture on the surface [Credit: Imaginechina]They also found that 283 of the statue's 830 hands and arms were damaged. To respect the religious history, the team consulted reference books and pictures to ensure the restoration was accurate.
The major part of the restoration involved attaching a new layer of gold foil to the statue. The original foil was between 83 percent and 92 percent gold. In some parts the statue had six layers of gold foil as a result of restoration work in the past.
The most comprehensive restoration of the 7.7m high and 12.5m wide statue
took four years to complete [Credit: Imaginechina]An ancient technique from the Song Dynasty was applied. The gold foil was first separated from the statue, washed in pure water and alcohol before being reapplied. Once in place, it was painted with three coats of lacquer.
The statue is due to reopen to the public on June 13, which is China's Cultural Heritage Day.
