The United States on Tuesday officially returned 25 artifacts looted over the decades from Italy, including Etruscan vases, 1st-century frescoes and precious books that ended up in U.S. museums, universities and private collections.A third century B.C. terracotta head, left, and a second century Roman bronze figure representing Mars, are shown during a press conference in Rome, Tuesday, May 26, 2015 [Credit: AP Photo/Alessandra Tarantino]
Italy has been on a campaign to recover looted artifacts, using the courts and public shaming to compel museums and collectors to return them, and has won back several important pieces.

The items returned Tuesday were either spontaneously turned over to U.S. authorities or seized by police after investigators noticed them in Christie's and Sotheby's auction catalogues, gallery listings, or as a result of customs searches, court cases or tips. One 17th-century Venetian cannon was seized by Boston border patrol agents as it was being smuggled from Egypt to the U.S. inside construction equipment, police said.

U.S. Ambassador John Phillips joined Italy's carabinieri art police to show off the haul. It included Etruscan vases from the Toledo Museum of Art and the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, 17th-century botany books from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, and a manuscript from the 1500s stolen from the Turin archdiocese in 1990 that ended up listed in the University of South Florida's special collections.
"Italy is blessed with a rich cultural legacy and therefore cursed to suffer the pillaging of important cultural artifacts," Phillips said, adding that Interpol estimates the illicit trade in cultural heritage produces more than $9 billion in profits each year.

Police said several of the items were allegedly sold by Italian dealers Giacomo Medici and Gianfranco Becchina, both convicted of trafficking in plundered Roman artifacts. After the objects were recovered, Italian authorities confirmed their provenance.

Police stressed that most collectors and museums willingly gave up the artifacts after learning they had been stolen. The Minneapolis museum director contacted the Italian culture ministry after reading an article about one suspect piece, police said.

Phillips praised the collaboration between Italy's police and U.S. Homeland Security and border patrol agents. He also said the U.S. had returned more than 7,600 objects to over 30 countries and foreign citizens since 2007.
By DAMIEN GAYLE Crazy: A 14-year-old youth has been charged with trespassing in connection with a photo like this one of a different planker A teenager has been charged with trespassing on the railway after a picture was posted on the internet of him apparently 'planking' on train tracks The photo of a teenager lying across railway tracks at an unknown location appeared on a planking fan page on Facebook. The shot of the youngster with his head on one rail and his feet on the other is one of hundreds which have featured on the group's page. Now a 14-year-old boy is set to appear at York Youth Court on July 5 in connection with the photo, according to a spokesman for the British Transport Police. Planking is a craze for taking photos of people lying down in unusual places and then posting them on the web. Game on: Planking during a game of golf A spokesman for the fan page - which was only set up in the past fortnight and which we cannot name for legal reasons - defended the past time. 'For most people, it's just a bit of harmless fun,' he told the York Press, declining to give his name. He said the group did not condone people planking in dangerous spots, but added they could not be held responsible for anyone who chose to do so. 'However, we have decided to regulate the site now and remove some of the pictures,' he said. 'We have blocked access [to the Facebook profile] to about 800 people under 18, as they might be easily influenced and put themselves in danger.' Risky: Participants taking part in the craze lie face down in a tree The page has already attracted nearly 3,500 'likes' on Facebook. Fans have posted pictures of themselves on the page planking in locations including on top of nightclub soundsystems, on cars and on bales of hay. The youngster allegedly pictured planking on the rail tracks was arrested after police received calls from members of the public identifying him. A spokesman for the British Transport police said: 'After the pictures were brought to our attention, we launched an investigation to identify the male involved. 'We would like to thank members of the public who came forward to identify the boy pictured, who was extremely lucky he wasnt killed or badly injured as a result of his behaviour. What a plank: Gordon Ramsay posted up a picture on his Twitter of himself trying out the latest internet craze of planking 'This was very dangerous behaviour. With high speed trains and electric currents, the railway should never be treated as somewhere to play or hang about. When people are spotted on the railway trains are alerted, which causes disruption and delays. 'People who trespass on the railway are not just risking a court appearance, they are taking a gamble with their lives. 'The last thing our officers want is to have to tell a mother, father or another family member that their loved one has died after trespassing on the railway.' She confirmed that this was only the second incident of 'planking' on the railways in the UK and the first arrest. In recent months, planking has become a worldwide craze - even celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay has posted pictures of himself doing it online. Tragedy: Simon Hallam was left fighting for his life after a planking stunt gone wrong But the phenomenon has already led to tragedies. Last month 20-year-old Australian Acton Beale died after he fell seven storeys from the balcony railing of a block of flats. Days later, also in Australia, plasterer Simon Hallam was left fighting for his life after falling and hitting his head while planking on the boot of a fast moving car. source : dailymail

A few weeks back I posted a teaser of what I was working on....sorry about the delay in revealing exactly what it was I was making! My eldest daughter, Amelia, has just turned 16, making me wonder where all those years went so quickly :-) I have wanted to make one of these Ottoman's for a long time so I pulled out an assortment of mostly aquamarine blues to go with the predominate colour in Amelia's bedroom. As you can see from the above photo it has been given the seal of approval from Caitlin's cat who decided to rub up against it just as I was taking a photo.
I've had the large white pom-pom trim for a while now just waiting for the perfect project, and I love the element of fun it adds to this piece.
Some aqua and white polka dot piping frames the bottom perimeter perfectly. As you may be able to tell it is quite a decent size. It took 54 5" squares to complete and an enormous amount of polyester stuffing to fill it properly. Amelia's cat in the background took no notice whatsoever in my photo shoot, seemingly more interested in taking in the view from her 'throne'.
Amelia celebrated her big birthday with a sleepover with 3 of her good friends, watching movies, chilling in the spa that I got going just for the occasion and eating lots of junk food as you do when you're 16! For her birthday cake I made her a 'red velvet cake' with cream cheese icing and sprinkled with pink coloured coconut, a recipe on my 'to do' list for a while now. I have just this past week finished making a couple of items for my shop so hopefully I can find the time to show them here tomorrow :-)

By JESSICA SATHERLEY Co-stars: Sean Penn looked after his family friend and co-star Eve Hewson on the red carpet at Cannes, who is the daughter of U2 frontman Bono Her famous father is used to the spotlight, but last night it was the U2 frontman’s daughter’s turn to steal the limelight at Cannes. Eve Hewson showed that she’s no shrinking violet by strutting down the red carpet in a stunning black and pink Chanel ensemble for the film premiere of This Must Be The Place. The 19-year-old stars in the crime thriller alongside her father’s pal Sean Penn and Talking Heads singer David Byrne. Eve certainly picked up some tips from Bono on how to turn heads, and looked lovely in the light pink skirt, black bodice and sheer overlay alongside Miu Miu heels, while Penn wore a Giorgio Armani tux. Earlier in the day she had attended a photo call for her new film too, and opted for a Miu Miu dress with a neon green cut-out leather yoke. Cute in Chanel: Eve turned heads in a light pink skirt, black bodice and sheer overlay by Chanel, alongside Miu Miu black heels This Must Be The Place is not Eve’s first appearance on screen though and had her first debut in 2002 on her father’s video documentary ‘U2 Go Home: Live from Slane Castle’. Eve also had a starring role last year in a short film titled For The First Time, but her latest project is by sure her largest. This Must Be The Place sees Penn play a wealthy former rock star in Dublin, who is now bored and embarks on a quest to find his father’s persecutor – an ex-Nazi war criminal now hiding out in the U.S. Cast members: Director Paolo Sorrentino stands to the right of Eve Hewson (centre) and Sean Penn stands to the left of her at the screening of This Must Be The Place at Cannes Rising actress: Eve had her first film debut in 2002 on her father's video documentary 'U2 Go Home: Live from Slane Castle', and has starred in a short film as well as a full length drama Learning his father is close to death, he travels to New York in the hope of being reconciled with him during his final hours, only to arrive too late. Having been estranged for over 30 years, it is only now in death that he learns the true extent of his father’s humiliation in Auschwitz at the hands of former SS Officer Aloise Muller – an event he is determined to avenge. While Eve plays his 16-year-old friend covered in tattoos, who rides around on a skateboard – which she admitted was hard to master. Serene: Being in the company of stars including Gwen Stefani, didn't seem to faze the young actress and she lapped up the limelight Star attractions: Rosario Dawson looked stunning and sexy in a strapless ruffled red gown, while German model Claudia Schiffer wore a sheer lace Dolce & Gabbana dress Sean Penn no doubt picked up some tips from Bono on how to play a rock star, but the U2 star did not attend yesterday’s event. But Bono is no stranger to Cannes and in 2007, he played alongside the rest of U2 at the top of the Palais steps to launch the screening of concert film U2 3D. Strike a pose: Earlier in the day Eve and Sean joined Judd Hirsch (left) and director Paolo Sorrentino at a photo call for their film in Cannes Fashionista: Eve Hewson opted for a Miu Miu dress with a neon green cutout leather yoke for the photo call, while Penn decided to wear his denims Eve is Bono and his wife Ali Hewson’s second-eldest daughter and grew up in Dublin with her three siblings, Jordan, 22, Elijah, 11, and John, 10, away from public exposure. Her youngest brother John turns 10 today, which he will no doubt be celebrating with his famous family at home in Ireland. Proud parents: Bono and Eve's mother Ali Hewson (seen here in Dublin last month) didn't attend Cannes this year and are thought to be back in Ireland to celebrate their 10-year-old son's birthday today Family vacation: Eve Hewson (purple dress) with her father Bono, mother Ali Hewson and sister Jordan in gladiator sandals during a family holiday in St Tropez in 2008 THIS MUST BE THE PLACE - HD-Teaser - Paolo Sorrentino

The geoglyph, Triple Spiral, dating back to 600 years ago and located in Trujillo was destroyed by agricultural invaders within the last month, according to El Comercio.
Before and after shots of the geoglyph [Credit: El Comercio]
The photos above demonstrate that between March 1 (the first photo) and April 11 (the second photo) of this year, the geoglyph was removed from the earth and tilled by agricultural invaders.
The Peruvian Association of Rock Art (APAR) reported that the individuals responsible were indeed people who strived to rid the site of any archaeological evidence in the hopes of irrigating and occupying the land for agricultural purposes.
Representative of APAR, Victor Corcuera determined that the invaders did the damage intentionally as they only drove their machinery on the geoglyphs and left the remaining land un-furrowed, according to El Comercio.
Archaeologists have determined that the geoglyphs design belongs to a phase later than that of the Chimu culture. The figure was considered one of the most well-known of the geoglyphs recorded in the region.
José Carlos Orrillo Puga, photographer of the photos, believes these perpetrators will continue to destroy the sites. “There are dirt roads leading to other sectors where geoglyphs remain intact,” Puga said.
Archaeologist Gori Tumi Echevarria told El Comercio, “The destruction of the Triple Spiral is a disgrace to the Peruvian archaeology, which can not allow the evidence to be destroyed and go unpunished.”
The Ministry of Culture announced this year that it does not have the resources to protect more than 1,000 of Peru’s archaeological sites. Recent denouncements of invasions and destruction of sites has the Ministry struggling to protect its sites.

According to MTV news, Ryan Dunn from MTV's "Jackass", was involved in a fatal car crash that took his life on Sunday night (June 19) in Pennsylvania. According to various sources, Dunn had been drinking right before the accident and what started as a fun night ended up turning into a tragedy for all of his family, friends, and fans. Rest In Peace Ryan! Here is the OFFICIAL press release: "According to TMZ, the accident occurred at 3 a.m. on Route 322 and New Street in West Goshen Township. While it's unknown who was driving at the time, an unidentified passenger also died in the crash. April Margera, the mother of Dunn's "Jackass" co-star Bam, broke the news to WMMR 93.3's "Preston and Steve" radio show. In the last photo Dunn posted to Twitter, he and two friends are seen drinking what may be alcoholic beverages. TMZ also reported that the car caught fire in the crash. A tow truck was later sent to the scene to remove the car. A photo obtained by an NBC affiliate in Pennsylvania, showed the wrecked car on the side of the road. As of press time, no further information was known about the accident. Dunn kicked off his career doing crazy stunts and skateboard tricks in a series of online videos, which eventually led to his part in MTV's "Jackass" in 2000. The daredevil was a key member of the crew, appearing in "Jackass" spin-offs like "Viva La Bam" and "Bam's Unholy Union," as Bam's sidekick and often acting as the voice of reason within the zany crew. Dunn's new show "Proving Ground," in which he and co-host Jessica Choban test out action sequences from TV, games and movies, premiered on G4 last Tuesday. When MTV News sat down with the "Jackass" crew last year, they named Dunn's first stunt for the show as one of their favorites in 10 years of the TV show and movies. "I loved when [Bam Margera] made Ryan jump into the poo factory, the 'Poo Dive' I think we called it," creator Jeff Tremaine said. " 'Cause that was horrible, but the best part was ... revealing his tattoos that we didn't know about. That was the first time we ever met Ryan." He appeared in all three "Jackass" flicks and even took a stab at Hollywood, with a role in non-"Jackass" projects like the Jessica Simpson flick "Blonde Ambition" and on the NBC procedural staple "Law & Oder: SVU." This is what those who were close to Ryan Dunn had to say about this sad news: "Today I lost my brother Ryan Dunn. My heart goes out to his family and his beloved Angie. RIP Ryan , I love you buddy." - Johnny Knoxville "I feel like I lost a brother, Ryan Dunn was family and we are all deeply devastated." - Jeff Tremaine (Jackass Director) "I have not been able to talk with Bam as he is in Arizona, but I cannot believe that his friend is dead. Ryan was a wonderful person he really was the sweetest and nicest guy - he was like my extra son, everybody loved him. Islamic State militants have destroyed two historic mausoleums in Palmyra, Syria's top antiquities official said Wednesday, raising fears that the extremists could next target the town's famed Roman ruins. This undated photo released on June 22, 2015, by a militant website, which has been verified and is consistent with other AP reporting, shows the tomb of Mohammad Bin Ali before being blown up by Islamic State militants, in the historic central town of Palmyra, Syria. Maamoun Abdulkarim, the head of the government's Antiquities and Museums Department, told The Associated Press that the extremists destroyed the grave of Mohammad Bin Ali, a descendant of Imam Ali, cousin of Islam's Prophet Muhammad and a deeply revered Shiite saint. The grave was just north of Palmyra.
The second tomb is close to the city's famed Roman-era archaeological site and was the final resting place of a Sufi scholar, Nizar Abu Bahaa Eddine, who lived in Palmyra some 500 years ago.
The militants of the Islamic State group are Sunnis who follow a radical interpretation of Islam that views visiting tombs and religious shrines as tantamount to idol worshipping. They view Shiites as heretics and the followers of Islam's mystical Sufi orders as deviants.

Since the Islamic State group captured Palmyra last month, there have been fears that the extremists, who have destroyed famed archaeological sites in Iraq, would demolish Palmyra's sprawling Roman-era ruins, which were once one of the most popular tourist sites in the Middle East.
Earlier this week, Abdulkarim said he had received "unofficial news" from Palmyra that the militants intended to blow up the town's main historic site and that he had contacted tribal chiefs in the area to try to dissuade the militants. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said it had received information that Islamic State militants have mined the site. The report could not be independently verified.
Palmyra's UNESCO world heritage site is famous for its 2,000-year-old Roman colonnades, other ruins and priceless artifacts. Before Syria's conflict began in 2011, tens of thousands of tourists visited the remote desert outpost, a cherished landmark referred to by Syrians as the "Bride of the Desert."
Syrian authorities say they moved hundreds of priceless artifacts to Damascus ahead of the IS takeover last month, but the fate of those ruins too large to move is now in the hands of the extremists. Islamic State militants have already looted and vandalized a museum in the Iraqi city of Mosul and have massively damaged the ancient cities of Hatra and Ninevah - both UNESCO world heritage sites.

By DAILY MAIL REPORTER Heartbroken: Bam Margera returns to the spot where his best friend and Jackass co-star lost his life in a horrific car smash in the early hours of Monday morning in Philadelphia Autopsy results reveal the crash was so violent it's impossible to determine if Dunn and passenger died from impact or from the fire that resulted Photo emerges showing stuntman in high spirits whilst he partied at a bar shortly before crash Co-star and best friend Bam Margera overcome with emotion as he visits crash scene Ryan Dunn's Jackass co-star Bam Margera broke down into floods of tears as he visited the spot where his best friend lost his life in a horror 130mph car smash. An inconsolable Bam spoke to a local news station and was so distraught he could barely put his loss into words. 'It was the worst phone call I ever got in my life waking up to that,' the 31-year-old wept. Raw grief: Bam could barely hold it together as he gave an interview to a local news station Margera, who was in Arizona at the time of the crash, visited the crash scene in Philadelphia on Tuesday evening. He was visibly overcome with emotion, rocking back and forth in agony at the guardrail that the car crashed through. 'I've never lost anybody that I cared about. It's my best friend,' he told local TV station WPXI, weeping. 'Worst phone call of my life': He paid tribute to his childhood friend and asked how he would cope with the loss he wept: 'I can't, I can't' 'He was the happiest person ever, the smartest guy. He had so much talent, and he had so many things going for him. This is not right, not right.' Margera stood at the guardrail that Dunn pierced with his Porsche Monday morning with such force that the car slammed through about 40 feet of trees before exploding into flames. When asked how he'd get through this ordeal, Bam replied: 'I can't. I can't.' Dunn's brother, Eric Dunn, said in an emailed statement to the AP that his family was 'devastated'. Memories: The cast of Bam's show Viva La Bam, a spin-off from Jackass, featuring Bam, front centre, his father Phil, far left, mother April and Dunn, back centre which ran for five seasons between 2003 and 2005 Emotional: Close friends of Dunn visited the spot where his car smashed into a guardrail before careering off the road and into woodland and exploding into flames In good spirits: A new picture shows Jackass star Ryan Dunn in high spirits as he parties at a bar with friends and fans shortly before he crashed his Porsche yesterday morning, killing himself and another passenger Childhood friends: Ryan and Bam, pictured back in November 2003 Wreckage: The charred remains of the Porsche 911 GT3 is towed away as police survey the scene Investigation: Dunn's Porsche was found engulfed in flames in woods beside the road Margera, who appeared in her son's MTV show 'Viva La Bam' with Dunn, says he was not the type of person to get behind the wheel while drunk. 'He is going to be missed by everyone,' April tearfully told the NBC Today Show. 'I have yelled at him for lots of things but he was not a big drinker and he was always responsible as far as I know, so I cannot believe he would do that. 'I am sick because it is a waste, sick because I loved him, sick because he was talented and sick because he is gone.' Meanwhile the passenger killed in Dunn's fatal car crash has been identified. Police have confirmed Zachary Hartwell, 30, perished in a fireball car crash in the early hours of yesterday morning. Hartwell, from West Chester, Philadelphia, had been with Dunn at Barnaby's and appeared in one of the last photographs to be taken of the daredevil before the accident. The two were drinking with a third unidentified male in a Twitter picture, which was posted hours before the accident. Speaking out: Bam Margera's mother April says she does not believe Dunn was driving drunk at the time of his death While Hartwell was not a member of the Jackass crew, he is listed as a production assistant on the second Jackass movie. He is also credited on IMDb as a 'car stunt driver' in Bam Margera's film Minghags. He was reportedly a recently married Iraq war veteran Dunn who was famous for his vulgar stunts in the multimillion-dollar TV and movie franchise Jackass, was driving his 2007 Porsche on a highway when it left the road, flipped over a guardrail and crashed into woods before bursting into flames. Speed may have been a factor in the crash, West Goshen Township police said. The force of impact shattered the vehicle into several twisted and blackened pieces, leaving the Porsche 911 GT3 unrecognisable except for a door that was thrown from the crash and not incinerated. A 100-foot-long tyre skid marked where the car left the road. Police said they were able to identify Dunn through his tattoos and hair. Dunn appeared on MTV shows Jackass and Viva La Bam and the three Jackass big-screen adaptations. He also was the star of his own MTV show, Homewrecker, and hosted Proving Ground on the G4 cable network. G4 spokesman Dave Welch said Proving Ground, which premiered on June 11 with the second episode due to air today, was being shelved until the network could discuss its future. Dunn's long-time friend and fellow Jackass daredevil Johnny Knoxville tweeted last night: 'Today I lost my brother Ryan Dunn. My heart goes out to his family and his beloved Angie. RIP Ryan, I love you buddy.' Passenger: Zachery Hartwell (right) was killed in Dunn's fatal car crash yesterday. The pair were at a bar with an unidentified friend in Philadelphia before the accident Dunn also starred in the yet-to-be-released film Living Will. The film's website describes Dunn's character as a 'party bum slacker (who) returns from the dead as a mischievous and perverted ghost'. MTV praised Dunn's tireless humour and enthusiasm and said he would be missed. 'We are devastated by the tragic loss of Ryan Dunn - a beloved member of the MTV family for more than a decade,' said Van Toffler, president of MTV Networks Music/Films Group. 'The Jackass brotherhood will never be the same.' Dunn was born in Ohio and moved at 15 to Pennsylvania, where he met Bam Margera on his first day of high school, according to a biography on his website. Dunn, Margera, Christopher Raab (known as Raab Himself) and Brandon DiCamillo, under the moniker CKY for 'Camp Kill Yourself', started making videos that featured them skateboarding and performing stunts. Where the night started: Dunn and Hartwell were both at Barnaby's in West Chester hours before the accident Dunn was working as a welder and petrol station worker when Knoxville, a friend of Margera's through the skateboarding circuit, asked the crew to allow their videos to be part of the series Jackass, which became a hit on MTV and ran from 2000 to 2002. Perhaps his most famous stunt, in 2002's Jackass: The Movie, involved inserting a toy car into his bottom and going to a hospital casualty unit, where he made up a story that he was in mysterious pain after passing out at a fraternity party. Dunn's X-ray from the hospital became a popular T-shirt for Jackass fans. In a 2000 stunt, he dived into a tank at a raw sewage plant wearing flippers, a mask and a snorkel.
