  • The Best Book Ever

    The Best Book Ever
My sweet husband was ordering on Amazon, not that long ago, and asked if there was anything i wanted...."anything?" I asked.

My running wish list was consulted and we picked a few quilty books. Among them was Block Party, by Alissa Haight Carlton and Krisitin Lejnieks.

This book is ridiculous good. So good you have to go get yourself a copy. I think i have read it cover to cover now several times..studied it even. That good!!! It is so full of great patterns and amazing inspiration. I loved reading every woman's quilt story.

There are many wonderful projects to choose from but these are some of my favorites. Ones i hope to make sometime. After all that is what i buy these books for right.....they aren't just for eye candy, are they? Ok, mostly they are...but this one makes me want to sew!!!!!

As an avid blog reader i have seen this quilting bee and that quilting bee pop up...and they all look amazing, but documenting this one the way they did was genius! What a wonderful way to feel a little of that old fashioned comraderie that came with coming together with other quilters to make something beautiful.

How fun would it be to make a sampler quilt from all of these blocks?

**this is all just my humble opinion. I am getting nothing out of this!**

  • Quilting for Australia

    Quilting for Australia
sevingSome of you may have seen the news stories about the tragic bushfires in Australia. I think there is a natural instinct in all of us to want to do something when there are people in this much need. But, being so far away from there what could i really do? Then Friday morning while i was blogging around before the kids got up i found this project, the Bushfire Quilt Project. Generously put together by this wonderful lady at Camp Follower Bags and Quilts Blog.
    seving
She had the idea to have a international quilting bee to make quilts for some of those people that are in need. A hug, if you will, of love and support from people all around the world.

A tutorial was put out on how to make these "wonky stars". When i saw this i knew this could be my way of helping. Quilting is not much but it is something that i can do. This project was also nice for me because it was something i had not tried before and it stopped at piecing.
    seving
I did not have to make a full top or quilt anything, so there is no unfinished project hanging over my head. It was all the satisfaction and none of the guilt. It is really nice to be part of something bigger that me.

This one is my very favorite. I had these pieced and finished all in one day. And despite my usual aversion to the post office i had them ready to go out Saturday. This was foiled by the post office closing early, sunday and a holiday....but i will get them there tomorrow, i swear!

  • April's quilting bee block

    April's quilting bee block
    Sewing
This block was for Russ, he asked us to make a 16 inch block that his daughter would like. I thought a star would be fun and it's something I have been wanting to try, I hope she likes it!
I am having so much fun be in A Notion or Two, I am learning so much!
I used this stars tutorial that I found via One Shabby Chick, which was alot easier and fun that I thought it would be. I think I will be doing more of these.

This whole quilting bee thing is so much fun! I have been able to try new things that I might not try as a whole quilt. I have been wanting to try zig zags, I used this tutorial from Sometimes Crafter, but I pieced the blocks together using the alternate piecing method she links to.
This block is for Mommymae, she is making her 3 year old son a quilt with her blocks.
I had so much fun appliqueing the robot, I mostly do little girl stuff, and I LOVED the colors and fabrics she sent! You can check out what's going on at A Notion or Two here!

I had a ton of projects to finish for August! First up, I participated in Oh Hello Friend's lovely package exchange. Here is the package I put together for my partner. I love doing these swaps, I have so much fun putting a package together. Sadly, I forgot to take a picture of the box I sent it in, it was super cute I thought, I taped patterned papers all over it. This picture really only gives you a peek at some of the contents. Here is what I sent: a basketful of vintage fabrics, ribbons and buttons, a jar of jelly bellies, the coolest leather journal with gold birds stamped all over from Anthropologie, a wooden stick pencil, a painted sea shell necklace, a couple of vintage flower hair pins, and a headband.

Sewing Here are my pretty packages I received from Oni! Brown paper packages tied up in strings, these are a few of my favorite things.

Sewing Here is what was inside! Vintage cards, handmade cards, vintage sewing patterns, buttons, and the coolest handmade necklace! Thanks Oni. I love everything!

I also participated in Modern Jax's scrappy Christmas block swap.
I got the ones done for my teammates just in time to send yesterday, I still have the charity block to send on it's way today. These were fun and gave me an excuse to buy Christmas fabric :)

And here is Amy's block for a Notion or Two, I actually got this one done before my trip, but didn't get around to sending it until yesterday, shame on me. She'll probably get it today though, she doesn't live far from me.
I still have one more block for another quilting bee from August, I need to get my butt in gear today and make that one!
