WIP, Like Usual
here is a WIP from last year. I pulled it out of a drawer and thought i would finish it up. It was stuffed away with all my other finished quilt tops and unfinished quilt tops. I guess last year i really was loving the fall colors and it was that time of year so why not. Honestly, I really should finish projects when i start them, because i am not that in love with the fabrics and colors anymore. But, i am feeling like i have to finish some things right now. The kids helped lay the blocks out for me...it was going to be random anyway so their help was appreciated. It keeps me from trying to make something random have more order. OCD!! It has been on the floor in the living room for a few days and it is like the family puzzle...i walk past then stop go back and change a few blocks around, and the kids notice then put their ten cents in. it has changed some more with the addition of a few solid blocks to make it more crib sized than play sized.Signed, Sealed, Delivered
You can never really know what is going on in the lives of the people around you, can you? The struggles others go through behind closed doors are often unknown to the people around them. I live in a very small community and had the privilege of lending a hand and a little comfort to someone that needed it. In turn she gave me inspiration. She is such an amazing woman, fighting breast cancer and being all the things all women wish to be. Strong, beautiful, inspiring. She is always cheerful and happy in spite of everything. Her love for and relationship with God shines through her. When i first heard what she was going through i kept asking myself what could i do? how can i help her? My skill set is quilting...so, I presented our homeschool group with the idea to make this quilt for her and was pleased that they wanted to take part and participate by writing personal messages to her. I just pray that they do not fade or wash away...i wanted to have the chance to wash it first to see if there were going to be any great catastrophes but i ran out of time. Pray!! pray hard.I could not bring myself to quilt through any of the personal messages so i just outlined each box in pink. Then i spent what felt like forever straight line quilting, of random sizes, the rest of the quilt. It looks beautiful but was a lot more time and work than i anticipated.I also wanted to hand stitch in some things that would be personal to her so i did a pink on pink breast cancer ribbon...a purple on purple cross...and the names of her husband and children, so that they would be with her when she used this quilt no matter when or where. I had not originally intended to make it pink but it turned out that they were her favorite colors. What a perfect coincidence.
She in turn gave me a gift...the gift of gratitude and appreciation(and a few tears) which really meant a lot to me. It is hard to know what people really think when you make something like this and then mail it away...and kids don't necessarily love getting a blanket.
This is ironically Breast Cancer Awareness month. What a perfect time to honor her fight by bringing her this quilt. If someone around you opens that door a little and lets you in consider it a privilege to do what you can....what seems so small and insignificant can mean so much to someone that is struggling. I know you don't know her but if you think of her take a minute and say a little prayer, every single one counts!
I am linking this up to Fabric Tuesday this week, as well as Amylouwho's for sew and tell. Got to Amylouwho's and see what everyone else has made and leave a little comment behind so they know you were there.Sew and Tell Friday
A friend of mine just had a baby...and what better gift is there than a quilt for said sweet baby!I pulled out some reproduction fabric that i had...it all came in a cute little bundle from Joanns. It took me some time to settle on a layout because i did not have quite enough to make the around the world pattern totally square. So i opted to lengthen it a little and add some aunt grace to the sides to make it a little wider. It came together quickly, and so far i have been able to keep my new years goal of doing a quilt from start to finish, no more tops lying around in WIP piles. Now of course that does not apply to the ones i have started in the past, just the ones i have started since the new year began.Simple straight line quilting, slightly random, not really a pattern...just enough to be sure that it is securely quilted. It was such a pain to quilt...more than usual. Why? Because i now officially HATE spray baste. This one was so unusually painful and the spray baste was giving me so many problems....and because it was a small quilt the stiffness of the 505 spray made it so unruly and hard to get through the machine. 505, we are over...officially we are broken up. Pins...it is you and me from now on!!!
this will be over on Amylouwho's...have a look at all the pretty things everyone else has made this week and tell them how much you love them...comments mean a lot!!Sew and Tell Friday
As you might know from old posts, i use Avery as my layout and design "consultant"...that way i don't go crazy trying to lay something out and then i won't change it because she worked so hard on it. It works for me! I think Mitch was inspecting her work...and it was definitely approved of.The pictures are not great...it is pretty rainy and dark today, but it still shows what those strips turned into. It is very nearly about 55 inches square. not intentional...just had that much fabric to make that much quilt. It is bright and colorful. Maybe subconsciously i was willing it to be warmer with my color choices...and it just might be working.I think i really like how the random placement of the white turned out...I have simple quilting plans for it....straight lines all the way!!!! And pins for basting for sure! The fabric is Jennifer Paganelli's bell bottoms. These fabrics were one of my very first internet fabric purchases from Randi at Fresh Squeezed Fabrics. They have been waiting to be created into something else, and this week it was their turn.Of course this is headed over to Amylouwho's to share with everyone. GO over and see what everyone got done this week. i know it is all going to be amazing!Scrap Happiness!!
This week i decided i needed a fast and easy project(i am talking 24 hours from piecing to binding). I also wanted to have a go at some of my scraps!! A personal scrap challenge, if you will, which I found to be harder than i thought. I just can not help myself, i always want to make the fabrics match! In comes husband....i asked him for help. "Please Hubby, go through my scraps and pile up the ones that look good." He sure did and even snuck in a challenge piece to see if i would use it...can you find the pirate ship? This denim wonky star is my favorite one. I always see scrap quilts and am stunned at how great they look when nothing is the same color and everything is random.Right down to the bindings i used scraps...these had been in my bucket all ready to go from previous finished projects.Today i want to say thank you to the blog friends out there that are still reading my blog. I would love to send you one of these mug rugs as a thank you!!! Please just leave a comment to let me know you were here and i will choose a winner by the end of the week.LeslieFriday Finishes in Paint and Fabric
My modern barn quilt canvas is finished! I am really pleased withh ow it came out and with the colors i chose. I had originally intended to do some accents in hot pink and yellow but now i am glad i did not. I could have changed and modified it a hundred different ways...another strip here or another color there... but at some point i had to choose to just walk away and let it be what it was.I really enjoyed the process. It sat on my counter and periodically over a couple days i would just walk back and forth and tend to the next part of the project. Peeling off that painters tape was always a thrill. I think there might be some companion pieces in the future...perhaps a wonky star or something like that.My fabric finish is for one of our wee little friends. There seem to be many babies being born, and shouldn't every one have a quilt of their own? i hope to mail it out to the intended family soon. i hope they will love it as much as i do.You can read a little more info on this quilt here. I finished it with some fairly random straight line quilting and bound and backed it in a fabric from my stash that just happened to be the right blue. Another reason to have a stash!!LeslieThe things all women wish to be...

It's gorgeous isn't it? A weekend or so ago i was out with my mom, aunt, sister and Avery. We walked into an antique shop and right away i saw it sitting folded so nicely on a chair at the back of the shop. My heart did a little flip and the palpitations started.
It was love at first sight. Hand pieced and sewn...nearly queen size. Amazing in every way.
I have been dreaming of finding something like this every time i walk through the doors of a second hand or antique shop. I did not buy it right away...but days later i could not get it out of my head so Chris got out of work early and we drove to the shop and made it mine. A special mother's day gift.
There was only a little light to take pictures in. I was trying to air it out and get some good pictures. Every time i look at it I see a new flower that i did not see the time before that I love more than the last. There are lots of feed sack and old vintage fabrics. I was told that as best she knew it was made in the 40's or 50's. Right now it is in my bedroom, draped over a quilt rack. I fold it and unfold it in various ways so i can see different fabrics. It must have taken the person who made it forever to make. Look at the binding, scalloped around all the little hexagons, hand sewn and perfectly folded to make little corners at each one.
Thanks for indulging all the pictures. My family has already been subjected to folding and unfolding and fabric loving and random giggling because of the sheer thrill of it...even my dad. I probably should not love a thing this much but it sure is saving me some time since i just recently began hand making little hexagons just like these myself.Sew and Tell Friday
Here they are....all four living together happily!!! The last two pillows are complete. I think i got a few measurements a little wonky but it did not matter too much because i could still stuff my old pillows in there.
I had just enough of the old curtain to make a envelope back for each one! Hooray!!This one, above, is much like my improv wall hanging that i made with Wee Play scraps. I just grabbed and sewed and then quilted it in concentric squares with straight lines.I chose a disappearing nine patch pattern for this pillow and then i just random straight line quilted it. I love that it made a whirlygig in the middle.
Each one is different but all go together. It is Friday so be sure to go and check out all the other finishes at Amylouwho's.Quilt bug
Yesterday, I decided to start this quilt instead of tackling something on my list of things I need to get made. I picked out the fabrics for this almost 3 months ago for round 4 over at the Old Red Barn Co. quilt along group. I'd been staring at the pile of fabrics for awhile and finally decided it was time. I love it and can't wait to get it sewn together, I have to take a little break from it though, quilting is hard work I tell you, my body is feeling it!
When I woke up, I found this little scene, Sage had cut them out from my leftover scraps while she was watching TV this morning, I think it is adorable.
And here is a random photo I took earlier this week I forgot about. I finished up a batch of wallets.
