No Makeup Week: Mint Julep Mask

No Makeup Week: Mint Julep Mask

Hey everyone! This is just a quick post to let you know what I have planned for this upcoming week. I'm going to be going away from Thursday until Saturday with my boyfriend and his family so I won't be posting those days. Because of this, I hope to be able to post a few times in the next few days!

In high school, like many teenagers going through puberty, I was ashamed of my skin. One day it would be oily, the next day it would be dry - and there was always acne to deal with! Over the years I've tried many products and skincare routines, with varying success. In high school I desperately tried to cover up my natural skin with layers of makeup. Liquids, powders, blushes - I used everything I could!

While I love what makeup can do to enhance an appearance, in the past two years I've realized that I love my natural beauty, too. I think going to college made me feel a lot more comfortable about going out without "putting my face on," because I was surrounded by the same people at all hours of the day. These kids have seen me when I wake up in the morning, when I'm in class, and before I go to sleep. They have seen me when I'm sick, when I'm just getting back from the gym, and even when I've gotten caught in a downpour running back from the library.

And They Like Me — Without Makeup!

What I'm trying to say is: I've gained a lot of confidence in myself in the past two years, and I don't feel the need to try to cover up anything with makeup. Yes, I love getting dolled up when I'm going to a party or going out on a date with my boyfriend, but other than that, I try to wear as little makeup as possible. Most days now I will only wear a brush of Physicians Formula pressed powder, a sweep of clear mascara on my lashes, and lots of lip balm.

Which brings me to this week. I've decided that, starting today, I want to go a whole week without wearing any makeup. No powder, no mascara (colored or clear). The only things I'll allow on my face are cleansers, moisturizer, and sunscreen. I don't think this will be too difficult to do, especially considering that I will be on an island in the Adirondacks from Thursday through Saturday. I think it will be an interesting experiment, to concentrate on my skin and really learn to appreciate it as it is.

    A Week Without Makeup?

Last year Rachel Rabbit White, a popular blogger and writer, pledged to not wear makeup for an entire week. Over 300 people took the challenge with her. You can read about that experience in this Huffington Post interview here. White brings up a lot of very interesting points about makeup in society today, so it's definitely a must-read.

I'll be posting photos this week, along with any findings or discoveries. Any of you brave enough to try this, too? I'd love to hear your stories or share links on my blog to your own posts! Drop me a comment or send me an email!

  • No Venus! Another Williams sister fashion disaster as tennis player wears ghastly playsuit at Wimbledon

No Venus! Another Williams sister fashion disaster as tennis player wears ghastly playsuit at Wimbledon
By JESSICA SATHERLEY and LAUREN PAXMAN
©Tiny playsuit: Venus Williams wore a thigh-skinning playsuit - with a curiously baggy top half for her first Wimbledon game today
Venus and her sister Serena have so much in common. They are both world class tennis players... and they both have terrible fashion sense.
The older Williams sister cruised through her Court Two match against Uzbekistan's Akgul Amanmuradova this morning, but it was her tiny playsuit - rather than her powerful serve - that everyone was talking about afterwards.
The white onesie was so short you could clearly see the golden hotpants she was wearing underneath every time she bent forwards during the match.
©Short shorts: The back of the playsuit was featured an on-tend cutaway, but one that is much more suited to black tie evening wear than to a sporting event
It also had a curiously baggy, and very unflattering top-half, which made her chest look saggy as she ran around the court.
But far from being something a sponsor forced the player to wear, this was an outfit from Venus' own clothing line, EleVen.
The back of the playsuit featured an on-tend cutaway, albeit one that is much more suited to black tie evening wear than to a sporting event.
©In action: Venus' outfit showed off her enviable figure - and the gold hot pants she was wearing underneath
Venus did not get everything wrong though - the cotton material had a pretty leafy design woven into it which could have made a lovely sun dress.
The short cut also showed off the tennis star's enviably long legs as she took huge strides towards the net. And the strange outfit clearly did not hold the 31-year-old back, she won her sets 6-3, 6-1.
©Cut above: Another view of the outfit from the rear
Yesterday, Venus' little sister, Serena, made her return to Wimbledon following a serious foot injury and blood clots in her lungs that almost ruled her out of tennis for life.
She made sure to stand out in fit form during warm ups by wearing some skin-tight pink and white tie-dye leggings.
And by the looks of the fiery stare in her eye, the US player about to give it her all during her comeback.
Serena, who is a fan of flamboyant on-court ensembles, combined her Nike leggings with a white long-sleeved T-shirt and a Nike black cap.
©On-court ensemble: Serena brightened up the court during her warm ups by wearing the tie-dye leggings
She is currently ranked World No. 25 in women’s singles, but has admitted that her and her sister Venus haven’t been able to train as much for the competition as they would have liked.
Serena said: ‘We spent a lot more time together because we were both off.
‘We both haven’t played pretty much at all. It’s been good because, sometimes I hate to say it, but, when you’re down, it’s always good to see someone down with you.’
©Letting her hair down: Serena of the USA was talking to the media at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club yesterday ahead of the Wimbledon Championships
Last year Serena won her fourth Wimbledon championship but afterwards suffered a serious foot injury from stepping on broken glass at a restaurant – preventing her from playing for the remainder of 2010.
In March this year she then suffered a hematoma and a pulmonary embolism but has still returned as the defending champion at Wimbledon this year.
While her sister Venus suffered from a hip muscle injury this year.
On top of Serena's medical complications, she may also have to face a showery start to Wimbledon.
©Sisters in white: Serena and Venus both wore all-white tennis outfits while training over the weekend
Weather forecasters have predicted torrential rain for the first three days .
But tennis fans still braved the weather to camp outside the All England Lawn Tennis Club in south London last night.
Luckily for the players, officials are preparing to shut the £100million retractable roof on Centre Court, to prevent the rain interfering with the match.
World No. 1 Rafael Nadal, 25, of Spain will open this year’s 125th Wimbledon Championship on Centre Court.

Too much fun in the sun: Joey Essex sleeps it off after a long day of boozing in Marbella
    By ANDREA MAGRATH
©Sleep it off: Joey Essex is caught taking a nap this afternoon after a long day boozing in the sunshine in Marbella
As a club promoter, he is responsible for ensuring everyone at his parties has the time of their lives - while keeping a level head himself.
But as Joey Essex is in Marbella on holiday, the reality star didn't mind over-indulging as he spent a long day partying in the sunshine.
It all became a bit too much for Joey though, who was later seen passed out in the shade after being helped to the resort bathrooms by his friends.
©Worse for wear: The reality star looked bleary-eyed as his mates helped him to the bathroom at their resort
The 20-year-old was seen indulging in glasses of beer as he reclined on a sun lounger surrounded by bikini-clad girls yesterday.
Joey was clearly keen to get his holiday off to a roaring start after arriving at the Spanish holiday resort, and looked more than a little worse for wear hours later.
The hot Marbella sun will only have increased the effect on Joey's intoxication levels.
©'This will sort you out': Joey's friends offered assistance by providing more beer
A bleary-eyed Joey was led to the bathrooms at the Buddha Beach Club by his friends, according to onlookers.
'He was drinking all day in the sun, then got up and was sick. His mates took him to the toilet and fed him some more beer and then he just crashed out,' a fellow partygoer said.
There was no sign of his girlfriend Sam Faiers, who is also holidaying with the cast of The Only Way Is Essex in Marbella, so it was up to Joey's mates to lend a hand.
©Before the downfall: Joey was seen throwing back beers in the sun
But the blokes appear to have decided that sleeping it off was the best course of action, leaving Joey passed out on a bunch in a deep sleep.
Joey's TOWIE castmates Jessica Wright, Sam Faiers, Lucy Mecklenburgh, James 'Arg' Argent and Lydia Bright have all descended on Marbella for their annual holiday.
They will be guests of Mark Wright who is hosting a series of parties at local nightclubs this week.

The bride DID wear Chanel: The Lagerfeld dress Lily Allen wore to the reception
    By LAUREN PAXMAN
©Evening gown: Lily Allen admires Lagerfeld's sketch and tries on her custom-designed Chanel dress, which she wore to the wedding reception
While Kate Middleton kept us guessing over her choice of wedding dress designer, Lily Allen's decision was all but confirmed months ago.
The singer hinted that Lagerfeld would be designing her gown while posing with him at Chanel's Paris Fashion Week show in March... and then confused everyone by wearing a Delphine Manivet dress down the aisle instead.
But there is a very logical explanation - like the Duchess of Cambridge, Lily had two wedding outfits, one for the ceremony and one for the reception.
The 26-year-old revealed all on her Twitter page after Lagerfeld uploaded an image of Lily wearing the white dress he had designed, along with a sketch of his creation.
The images were accompanied by a caption explaining that they were taken by Benoît Peverelli at a fitting in Chanel's Paris headquarters, 31 rue Cambon.
Fashion blogger Laura LaRue tweeted a link to Lagerfeld's picture saying: 'Confused? Me too.'
©Radiant bride: Lily, with husband Sam Cooper, in the Delphine Manivet dress she wore to her wedding ceremony, which also featured transparent sleeves and detailing on the bottom of the skirt and was designed to accommodate her baby bump
Lily wrote straight back, explaining: 'I wore my BEAUTIFUL Chanel dress to our reception.'
There are many similarities between the two dresses. Both had a transparent layer which went right up to the bride's neck.
The Delphine Manivet gown was lacy, and had a sweetheart neckline underneath, while the Chanel number featured beautiful floaty sleeves that were puffy to the elbow and then tight to the wrist.
It also had intricate embroidery on the bustier, and looks like it was semi-transparent below that.
Both gowns had additional detailing on the bottom half of the big skirts.
Manivet has revealed that her gown was intentionally designed to be roomy as Lily has been trying for a baby since January.
The singer's husband, Sam Cooper, announced his wife was four months pregnant on their wedding day - to gasps of joy from his guests.
We imagine there were similar exclamations of affectionate surprise when they laid eyes on the radiant bride in each of her stunning gowns.

sevingThis week i finished Avery's prairie bonnet....for our previously mentioned prairie days. And Mary, that title was for you! I thought of it as soon as i saw your comment on her pinafore.

she picked out a very colorful and modern floral by Kaffe Fassett. I am impressed with her taste. I also wanted to make this very old fashioned thing be more modern and updated. If you can update a bonnet?
    seving
I am more than thrilled that she wanted to wear it all today on our little afternoon trip to the river. My homemade gifts are not usually a thrill to my kids so to have her wear it and love it makes my day.
    seving
I found a very easy and fun tutorial on how to make a simple bonnet at Given Moments blog. i was able to make the brim, bonnet and ties with a fat quarter and used a contrasting fabric inside the brim.

The third and final Easter dress, yay I'm done! This one is for my youngest Sage. She tells me she doesn't like it, but she often changes her mind, we'll see. They all get to wear them tonight, my mother-in-law is having pictures taken of them, we even bought flip-flops to match yesterday, hooray for $2.50 flip flops at Old Navy!

....besides vacation! Today i re-fashioned/purposed a old dress for Avery into a pinafore for 'prairie days'...something i am going to do with her over the next few weeks. I was trying to figure out what i was going to use and then i came across this old dress, that was just a little too small for her.
    seving
It was already on my sewing table, because i planned on making it into a skirt for her. So i just got out the sewing scissors and cut a straight line as best i could. No marking, no measuring...i just eyeballed it.
    seving
I quickly hemmed the now raw edges and she looked adorable. And as a bonus, because it was lined she can wear it either way, but i think she is partial to the layered look she is showing off here.

These pretty things were in my mail today. I recently won a contest on Red Pepper Quilt Blog. Rita was so nice to give these Flea Market Fancy blocks away, they are 10 inches square. I already have them laid out on my floor, as Avery and i contemplate how they are all arranged at the moment. I hope i can do them justice. If you love quilts you should check out her blog, she makes beautiful quilts, and fast. Thank you so much Rita, it was a thrill to win!

Racy Katie: Katie Holmes left a Miami restaurant today in a white crochet top which exposed her black bra
She is known to keep her wardrobe on the conservative side with her array of sophisticated dresses and covered-up comfortable casualwear.
But in a daring turn, Katie Holmes stepped out today in a white crochet top, which exposed her black bra.
The 32-year-old sported the uncharacteristic risqué look as she left a restaurant in Miami.
The actress had clearly gone for a relaxed look, paring the vest with some white floaty trousers and embellished sandals.
Toting a cup of coffee, she topped off the look with a fedora hat, black wayfarers and a make-up free complexion.
Katie has been getting into Miami style with her array of beachwear.
On the weekend, Katie showed off her slimmed-down physique in a bikini as she played with five-year-old daughter Suri on Miami beach.
Mother and daughter are together at the seaside town in Florida where Tom Cruise, 48, is filming Rock of Ages.
©Beachy keen: The actress had clearly gone for a relaxed look, paring the risqué vest with some white floaty trousers and embellished sandals
Katie wore a red bikini and pink denim shorts while Suri was fully clothed in a multi-coloured dress.
The family were also spotted celebrating Father's Day in Miami on Sunday where Katie and Suri were pictured strolling with Cruise and then boarding a boat.
The close-knit trio were seen around the marina together in casual weekend wear.
Katie carried Suri in her arms, as always, to the luxury yacht which they hopped on for their afternoon cruise.
©Accessorising: Toting a cup of coffee, she topped off the look with a fedora hat, black wayfarers and a make-up free complexion
After they boarded the yacht, named Marquis, Katie and Suri sat on the deck while Cruise kept cool inside as they sailed out to sea.
The couple have been the butt of break-up rumours pretty much from as soon as they got together six years ago.
But the loved-up twosome showed that their relationship is stronger than ever and were very touchy-feely at an event in Miami Beach later in the weekend.
©Making waves: On the weekend, Katie showed off her slimmed-down physique in a bikini as she played with five-year-old daughter Suri on Miami beach
Katie lovingly grabbed her husband of nearly five years from behind and Cruise reciprocated, resting his hand over hers in a sweet gesture.
The couple turned up the Miami heat during a night out with the cast members from Rock of Ages including Julianne Hough and Malin Akerman.
They cosied up at Larios Cuban style bongo club and seemed to enjoy their date night in the Sunshine State.
©Beach babes: Katie keeps close to her daughter Suri as they play in the water
Cruise is undergoing an amazing transformation to play long-haired, tattooed rocker Jaxx in the film, which is due for release next year.
Also starring Russell Brand, it tells the story of a girl who arrives in Hollywood at the height of the 1980s rock scene.
It's a very different role for Cruise, and Katie has given her backing to the career departure for her husband by revealing that he likes to perform at their home.
'Tom is such an amazing performer. Yes, we have music in our house and it’s amazing,' she told Access Hollywood.

  • Fit for Real People

    Fit for Real People

    Song Kyung

Even though Jane's instructions were amazingly clear it took my little beginner brain actually seeing the movement - after that it was so easy and I'm a Bias convert! Sorry for the picture below, I know how eerie (and boring) faceless pictures are but I'm not up to posting my silly facials on the Internet yet... give me time!

So what do I like about it?

Well it's really pretty, and Tasia's instructions were invaluable for a beginner. Also it seems like one of those patterns that you could make loads of little adjustments to make each blouse unique. Look at me! Talking like I know about sewing. I say it because I've seen a few alterations like Jane's below and they're really cute - I'm even going to attempt my own!

What don't I like about it?

My complaints are currently limited to my own talent. I found it a bit difficult to work with such slippery fabric, especially when it came to cutting. The only other thing was fitting - My abilities of tissue fitting are horrible but I take zero blame for that - I'm currently under the impression you need to have as many arms as Shiva, a gazillion-jointed-spine, and eyes in the back of your head (or a dress form worth AU$450) to be able to fit on your own body. So I've caved and just ordered 'Fit for Real People' hopefully those divas on the front cover will show me how to wear shoulder pads with pride!

    What about doing French seams?

Eep! After doing French seams on the shoulders I got totally distracted by my bias-tape dilemma and forgot to do them! From my limited experience they were super easy, and they look much nicer than my other seams as I kick it old-school and don't have a Serger... that's just how I roll.

    Would I make it again?

Heck yeah Grizzly Bear! I've already got my fabric and I'm going to make a few adjustments to the pattern so it fits better, not to mention do it a little 'neater' this time. I might even be adventurous and make a few minor changes with the detail? I'm thinking buttons, because who doesn't like buttons? If you want to see more you can check out the Flickr Group, but I just had to point out the one below because I think she's hot stuff.

Oh blogging, how I have missed you!
I don't have new internet yet, but for some weird reason it's deciding to cooperate! I have missed blogging. So here I am again. Please don't be mad at me sweet blog for it has not been my fault! Last Sunday I wanted to share my cute skirt that I remade in all of about 10 minutes. It began as a very nice linen skirt that I have had for who knows how many years, but haven't worn in awhile. And I collect vintage trims and wanted to use it for something. So I cut it shorter, added a couple of trims, I even left the bottom of the skirt with a raw edge because I think it will look even cuter as it frays, and now I have a cute skirt that I will wear! Italy: Rome Pyramid restored to gleaming white glory
Rome's famed 2000-year-old pyramid has been restored to its gleaming white ancient glory following a two-million-euro project.

The Egyptian-style pyramid-shaped tomb of Gaius Cestius, an Augustan era general, reopened to the public this week following an extensive restoration initiated in March 2013. Japanese fashion mogul Yuzo Yagi who funded the project said "It is extraordinary to return it to the white city like [it was] two thousand years ago. It was a great job with an incredible team led by two women", referring to Rita Paris and Maria Grazia Filetici, Italy's archaeological superintendency directors who oversaw the project.

The 120 foot-high pyramid, according to Paris, was constructed in 330 days, made of white Carrara marble. The 21st century restoration of the 2000-year-old tomb took a cumulative 327 days, 75 days less than projected.

Yagi donated two million euros to the innovative internal and external restoration that required a mix of traditional and non-tradition conservation in areas such as vegetation removal, marble facade protection, marble panel stabilization and damage prevention, and a handicap-accessible entrance ramp.

The restoration was much needed after centuries of wear and tear, which included, as Paris detailed, the tomb's incorporation into the 3rd century AD walls, looting in the Middle Ages, mid-17th century restoration, and use as a meeting spot in the 19th century.

Present at the invitation-only inauguration was Umberto Vattani, president of the Italy-Japan Foundation, cultural and foreign affairs undersecretaries Francesca Barracciu and Benedetto Della Vedova, Rome Cultural Heritage superintendent Francesco Prosperetti, and Rome Mayor Ignazio Marino.

Barracciu said that the restoration was "a brilliant best practice that strengthens our belief that the public and private collaboration is a way to go again with more determination. And since last July's Art Bonus, we are very confident ".

When asked if Yagi would finance future heritage projects in Italy, the fashion mogul said "we have a long list of aid to Japan, for the tsunami-affected areas. But I would be happy to return in the coming years".

  • A variety of towels in our life

A variety of towels in our life
Round us it is a lot of prophetic. Of them we so have strongly got used to many, that often we do not give them any value though it's not always justified. First of all it concerns towels which the person use constantly throughout all life.

Towels are necessary in each house

Bella CosaIn any house there are some various towels with which tenants and visitors wipe hands, the body, ware...

The towel is the textile product of the rectangular or square form created specially for a wipe of any subjects, including bodies of the person. Towels have appeared many years back. About them there are mentions in the Bible and national legends of any people.

Towels on appearance are very similar to wafers (therefore them and name wafer). They well absorb a moisture (three times better, than terry towels), perfectly mass, promote microblood circulation and a lymph. They can be used both for a wipe of ware and hands, and in a bathroom. In Hotel Bedding Collection Set — are often included wafer and terry towels.

For massage special massage towels from the flax which unique structure helps a body to relax are created. With their help also it is possible to pound a body well.

SobellaWell, and on a beach we, certainly, take a beach towel on which it is possible to sunbathe on the sun and to be wiped after swimming. Allocate also special towels for hands. These are towels of the small size which hang up in a bathroom or in a toilet about a bowl for a wipe of hands.

Towels from velour weave from five threads. Four threads form the top and bottom basis of a fabric (them in pairs bind with each other), and the fifth — pile (it is a velvety thread more often). After end of weaving a fabric cut to separate the top basis from the bottom. Other name of these towels — Luxury Hotel Towels.

Besides, towels differ on a material of which they are made. Certainly, most widespread of them is the cotton fabric from which weave towels many centuries successively. The cotton fibre well absorbs a moisture, does not collapse during the big number of washings and is steady against a friction which is inevitable at towel use. On Queen Bed Blanket always at a headboard put a cotton towel.

SovillaTowels also make from silk, a bamboo and a paper. Silk towels beautiful, gentle and improbably magnificent, but badly absorb a moisture and instantly stick to a body. Bamboo towels very soft and gentle.

From a bamboo weave beach towels since the bamboo fibre possesses cooling effect more often. From a paper make disposable towels for a kitchen room which perfectly absorb a moisture and effectively clear ware of a dirt and the food rests.

The terry towel is the most favourite towel, gentle and soft in which it is pleasant to be turned after a shower or a bathroom. Weave such towels from the terry fabric which pile turns out for the account of free giving of loops of leaky tense basis. Terry towels perfectly well absorb a moisture, quickly dry and long do not wear out.

Certainly, always it is possible to manage one towel for all occasions, always it is possible to buy not so expensive towel of so low quality, but, you see, when it is a question of such important subject as a towel, it is wrong and very unreasonable!

  • Picasso, Matisse and... Tim Burton!..

     Picasso, Matisse and... Tim Burton!..

    Johnny Depp

    Alice In Wonderland: Johnny Depp

Weirdo. Loner. Outsider. These are some of the terms director Tim Burton uses to describe himself. You will notice `creative genius’ isn’t one of them, however, the term is being thrust upon on the quirky filmmaker thanks to Tim Burton: The Exhibition which opened at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) in Melbourne on Thursday. The show is an extension of an exhibition curated by the Performance Center Alexanderhoehe, Iserlohn (Germany), which attracted more than 850, 000 visitors and made it the third largest exhibit at MoMA ever, behind Picasso and Matisse.

It is a remarkable feat for someone who is firstly, not a mainstream artist, and secondly, alive.

“Most of this stuff was never meant to really be seen,” says Burton, sitting cross-legged in an ACMI room in his signature uniform of black jeans, a black shirt and black oversized cardigan. His famous curly hair frizzes out at all ends and his hands, fluid and always moving, add to its state by running through it as he describes the `freedoms’ of being labelled a weirdo.
“As soon as society says you’re a weirdo, then you’re a weirdo, whether you like it or not,” says the 51-year-old.
“After a certain time you just accept it and it gives you a sense of freedom because if you want to wear a bag over your head society will just accept it because they thought you were weird anyway.
“Like when I was at Disney they thought I was weird, so I would work under my desk for half the day.
“Sometimes if they couldn’t find me I’d just be in a dark cupboard working, like my private confessional.
“So there’s an amount of freedom when you’re categorised a certain way. “
Growing up in Burbank, California, Tim Burton was fascinated by the visual image and spent his formative years sketching, painting, animating and filming what he saw around him.
“When you circle outside of society, when you’re kind of, you’re not in there, you’re looking at things,” he says.
“A lot of it has to do with feeling out of society so you have a lot more observation.”
These observations make up the first part of the exhibit, Surviving Burbank, and include, among dozens of sketches and early short films, a handmade book he submitted to Disney in the 1970s and the accompanying rejection letter. Several years later Burton achieved his goal and began working at Disney’s Burbank studios as an animator. Some of his early work for the company was as on family hits The Black Cauldron and The Fox and the Hound, which Burton physically shudders remembering.
“I was never good at drawing foxes, especially the cute ones,” he says.
“That’s why I can’t look at the exhibit because it freaks me out too much.
“I know they’ve done a good job, but it’s like seeing your dirty laundry hanging up. “`Oh there’s my underwear from 1973 and there’s some dirty socks.’

Personal embarrassment aside, the exhibition is an in-depth look at the creative processes and twisted imagination of Burton, featuring more than 700 works including drawings, early films, sculptures, concept art, installations, puppets, costumes and cinematic ephemera. The second part of the exhibition, Beautifying Burbank, follows Burton’s step away from the Disney studio and his first early film and animation works, including his rarely seen Japanese kung-fu version of Hansel and Gretel and better known works Frankenweenie and Vincent, the latter based around one of Burton’s great inspirations — horror movie icon Vincent Price.

The final section, Beyond Burbank, looks at his feature film career, which has spanned over two decades. From his early works, such as Beetlejuice and Edward Scissorhands, to more recent films like Charlie and The Chocolate Factory and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street, Burton has made the leap from cult to commercially successful filmmaker. His latest film, Alice In Wonderland, has grossed more than $1 billion at the international box office and gone on to become the fifth highest grossing film of all time. But Burton is quick to write-off his recent success and says if spending half his lifetime in the movie-making business has taught him anything, it is that filmmaking is a `humbling process’.

“I remember after making Batman I thought `oh, that was a success, I can go and do anything now’,” he says.
“And so I went and pitched them Edward Scissorhands and they gave me a completely blank look.
“Nobody wanted to do that and nobody wanted to do Ed Wood, so I had to go about it in other ways.
“Then I remember pitching a musical version of The House Of Wax with Michael Jackson that he was into but they, the studio, were definitely not into.
“It’s always a struggle to make a film.”

Despite the many `challenges’ faced when trying to get a project off the ground, Burton says he has faith that everything works out for a reason. He cites the studio not letting him have Sammy Davis Jr play Beetlejuice as an example, because `it opened the door for Michael Keaton’ who also went on to play Batman in Burton’s two adaptations of the comic book superhero. Another near-miss occurred when, after three hours of auditioning, Burton talked a young Tom Cruise out of wanting the role of Edward Scissorhands, which was later filled by Johnny Depp, who has become a frequent collaborator and one of Burton’s closest friends. Failed projects and major successes go hand in hand for Burton, who says he has learned `not to regret anything’.

“I don’t really regret, it’s always important not to,” he says.
“Every movie I’ve done, whether it’s turned out or not, I’ve still enjoyed aspects of it, you know?
“I mean I think the one I got the most slack with is Planet Of The Apes because that was messing with a classic.
“But I still enjoyed seeing talking apes."

One of the highlights of the exhibition is the 2.7kg costume Depp wore in Edward Scissorhands (above), which is stationed at the entrance to the exhibit along with one of the scissor hands on display in a glass cabinet. Other featured works which will have the legions of Burtonites, the name given to passionate Tim Burton fans, gushing is the famous outfit Michelle Phfieffer wore as Catwoman in Batman Returns, original puppets from Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas borrowed from the Disney archives, costumes and sketches from Alice In Wonderland and the Burtonarium, a carnival tent buried deep within the exhibit which houses a light emitting sculptural work by Burton called Carousel (pictured at the very bottom).

ACMI Head of Exhibitions Conrad Bodman says the `diversity’ of the exhibits represents Burton as a filmmaker and goes a long way to explaining his loyal fan base.

“One of the things that Tim has always done is work across a range of film genres - action films, animated films, family films, horror films - and I think all of those types of films have different audiences and when you pull all those inspirations together in the one place, people want to come,” he says.
“What we’re showing in the exhibition is a lot of original concept artwork for his major feature films and we’re kind of looking at the process of his feature filmmaking over the years.
“People can see that often the hand drawn is the starting point for some ideas and then that turns into a visual reality for a whole process of development.
“Tim still does a lot of that kind of drawing, painting and making puppets for himself and people will be fascinated to see that process in action.”

Unlike many other filmmakers, Burton says he has been able to maintain his artistic integrity and stay connected to his creative roots by separating himself from the industry.

“I don’t live in Hollywood,” he says.
“I moved away many years ago and once you start doing things they try to treat you as a commodity, a thing.
“You know, you spend your whole life to be recognised as a human being and then they try to tag you as a thing.
“Like `oh, you’ve done this and that’s what we expect’ so I don’t go back and look at my films too much because I try not to become a `thing’.
“I try to keep human... no person or people should be described as one thing.
“I think everybody has lots of different aspects to their personality.
“Some are dark, funny, sad, there are so many words for each person.”

Considering Melbourne was originally to be called Batmania, after one of it’s founders John Batman, it seems appropriate that it is to be the home of Tim Burton: The Exhibition, which runs until October 11. Already ACMI has experienced a fevour amongst Burton’s Australian fans, with all of his public appearances selling out within 24 hours of going on sale and hundreds of fans queuing through Federation Square to be the first to enter the exhibit when it opened on Thursday and have copies of the exhibition guide signed by Burton himself. It is ironic that his work and films are so accepted by the society he once considered himself `outside’ of. It is a phenomenon best summed up by Burton’s partner and regular collaborator Helena Bonham Carter, with whom he has two children. In a book on the art of Tim Burton she says: “When I see him surrounded by flushed and hyperventilating young fans I feel it’s a triumph of the lonely misunderstood outsider child he once felt he was. Now he’s the most understood misunderstood person I’ve come across in the world.”

In the meantime Burton says he is enjoying a lull between live action projects, while busying himself with a feature-length adaptation of Frankenweenie (concept art), due for release next year. He emphasises the stop-motion animated film is the only project he is working on and committed to, despite online reports which have linked him to adaptations of The Addams Family and super-natural TV series Dark Shadows, both which he blatantly denies were ever `considered’.

“That’s why I never go on the internet because it always seems like I have some sort of evil clone out there that is doing all these projects,” he says.
“I’m still recovering from the last one.
“Whenever I read this stuff I get tired, I think `God, I must be busy’.
“The studios often have a release date before they have a script, which is such a mistake.
“I’m trying to get out of that and, you know, into this strange concept of having a script before you announce a release date.”

P.S. I did the good Samaritan thing on Sunday and took some boys I babysit to see The Karate Kid. Considering what I endured sitting through that movie, karma better have a pet unicorn heading my way! And while you're in the laughing mood, you must must must watch the video clip for The Karate Kid theme song: Never Say Never by Justin Bieber, featuring rapping from Jaden Smith. Hopefully this is not an indication that Smith will make a rap song to accompany every movie he makes, just like his dad. But seriously, when you look young standing next to Justin Bieber then it's time to stop rapping and get back in the womb.

Her famous father is used to the spotlight, but last night it was the U2 frontman’s daughter’s turn to steal the limelight at Cannes.
Eve Hewson showed that she’s no shrinking violet by strutting down the red carpet in a stunning black and pink Chanel ensemble for the film premiere of This Must Be The Place.
The 19-year-old stars in the crime thriller alongside her father’s pal Sean Penn and Talking Heads singer David Byrne.
©Cool and composed: The 19-year-old actress appeared relaxed in front of the press and photographers at the premiere of This Must Be The Place, by director Paolo Sorrentino
And Penn made sure to act as a protective father figure for Eve on the red carpet by staying close by her side throughout the night, as her parents didn't attend the event.
Eve certainly picked up some tips from Bono on how to turn heads, and looked lovely in the light pink skirt, black bodice and sheer overlay alongside Miu Miu heels, while Penn wore a Giorgio Armani tux.
Earlier in the day she had attended a photo call for her new film too, and opted for a Miu Miu dress with a neon green cut-out leather yoke.
Being in the company of stars including Gwen Stefani, Rosario Dawson and Faye Dunaway didn’t seem to faze the young actress at all and appeared calm and relaxed.

This Must Be The Place is not Eve’s first appearance on screen though and had her first debut in 2002 on her father’s video documentary ‘U2 Go Home: Live from Slane Castle’.
She also appeared on Irish chat show The Late Late Show in 2003 and in 2008 had a role in the drama The 27 Club - which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York.
Eve also had a starring role last year in a short film titled For The First Time, but her latest project is by sure her largest.
This Must Be The Place sees Penn play a wealthy former rock star in Dublin, who is now bored and embarks on a quest to find his father’s persecutor – an ex-Nazi war criminal now hiding out in the U.S.

Learning his father is close to death, he travels to New York in the hope of being reconciled with him during his final hours, only to arrive too late.
Having been estranged for over 30 years, it is only now in death that he learns the true extent of his father’s humiliation in Auschwitz at the hands of former SS Officer Aloise Muller – an event he is determined to avenge.

Sean Penn no doubt picked up some tips from Bono on how to play a rock star, but the U2 star did not attend yesterday’s event.
But Bono is no stranger to Cannes and in 2007, he played alongside the rest of U2 at the top of the Palais steps to launch the screening of concert film U2 3D.

Eve is Bono and his wife Ali Hewson’s second-eldest daughter and grew up in Dublin with her three siblings, Jordan, 22, Elijah, 11, and John, 10, away from public exposure.
Her youngest brother John turns 10 today, which he will no doubt be celebrating with his famous family at home in Ireland.
©Proud parents: Bono and Eve's mother Ali Hewson (seen here in Dublin last month) didn't attend Cannes this year and are thought to be back in Ireland to celebrate their 10-year-old son's birthday today

  • Fabric Cuffs! , not that kind silly :)

Fabric Cuffs! , not that kind silly :)
    Sewing
I've wanted to make fabric cuffs for awhile now, and finally got around to it tonight. I am pretty sure this is going to be my new obsession, they are quick, easy, and fun to make!
    Sewing
This one is made with vintage linen and lace, I'm going to wear it to church tomorrow!
I am going to have to add these to my list of things to make for upcoming shows.
  • I can breath again (sigh)

    I can breath again (sigh)
The past month or so I have been running around like a crazy person (who am I kidding, I am a crazy person) getting ready for all my shows, I am finally done, I still have one more show on the 10th and 11th, but I am pretty much done getting ready for it. After getting past this weekend doing two shows at the same time, I finally feel like I can breath again. I usually am ready for Christmas by now, but I haven't really done much yet. I now have time to work on things for our handmade Christmas, but is that what I worked on tonight? Nope.Sewing This awesome vintage coat that I thrifted for $8 is what I played around with, started out a really cool blue grey coat.
    Sewing
Ended up an even more awesome coat that I think looks like something that would cost $250 at Anthropologie, but everything was thrifted, and probably cost me less than $15 total, couldn't really say, all the lace and doilies came from my stash. (I have quite an impressive lace stash if I do say so myself, thanks to thrifting.)
SewingI can't wait to wear it!

  • gingham skirt

    gingham skirt

So, I am participating in Elsie Marley's Kids clothes week challenge.  I have been a bit of a slacker, having two kids home with pink eye has taken a toll on free time this week :)  They are all at school today though.  I have cut out 3 different sizes of the Oliver and S ice cream dress pattern, and have one of the dresses cut out, but I am having a hard time getting excited to sew with a pattern.  Patterns and I do not get along, I think I just don't have the patience for them.

I did make this skirt this morning though.  I purchased the brown gingham yesterday, I knew immediately that I wanted to make a skirt out of it, and Jade's birthday is coming up soon, so it was perfect.

I added a little apron trimmed with big ric rac and a doily, and also the French vintage eyelet trim at the bottom.  I love how it turned out, I would so wear this if it was my size.
  • skirts, skirts, skirts.

    skirts, skirts, skirts.
Sewing I've been making lots of skirts, I think they are one of my favorite things to make and wear.

I made this one for me out of Amy Butler's Love using this tutorial with a few modifications. I've already worn it twice, I love it.

Sewing This skirt I made this morning before I had to pick Sage up from school. It is for Christmas. Yes I am thinking about Christmas. I have decided that the couple hours I have while Sage is at Kindergarten in the morning will now be dedicated to Christmas crafting.

I love this little mushroom skirt! The whole thing was inspired by the red and white scalloped trim on the bottom that I purchased from Stephanie of Stephmodo.

She sells her beautiful finds (usually from France) in her etsy shop.

By the way if you haven't followed their restoration of a beautiful french cottage La Maisonnette, you should go check it out, it is amazing. I want to stay there at least once in my life.

©Red carpet debut: Elizabeth Hurley and Shane Warne leave the model's London home to head to Sir Elton John's White Tie and Tiara Ball
Shane Warne's new appearance continues to baffle and entertain in equal measure.
The 41-year-old Australian cricket star played the smooth-faced English gent as he escorted his girlfriend Elizabeth Hurley to Elton John's White Tie and Tiara Ball.
The pair, who have been dating since last December, cut quite a dash as they headed to the annual fundraising event held at Sir Elton and partner David Furnish's Windsor Home but the main talking point was Mr Warne's distinctly smoother face.
    ©
Smooth operator: Shane Warne as he was in 2005 and how he now looks six years on
The cricketer, who has built up a reputation as a stereotypical macho Australian 'bloke', appeared to be wearing make up to boost his looks.
He had his eyebrows shaped into a definite arch, perhaps styled by his own girlfriend, together with a goofy smoothed over hairstyle.
Also noteworthy was his distinctly smoother looking face, particularly the area around his eyes with the disappearance of his crow's feet.
©You old smoothie: Shane Warne's altered appearance has led to speculation from some observers
©Posed up: The couple, who have been dating since last December, looked smart in their outfits
In recent weeks observers have noted that the cricketer's formerly weathered, rough and ready appearance has altered somewhat thanks primarily to his weight loss, though he has rubbished any suggestion of surgery.
Last week, cosmetic surgeon Dr Shahab Mahdi told the Daily Star: "The difference in Shane's appearance is dramatic. In my opinon it looks as though he has had a facelift.'
His army of followers are not convinced either, accusing Shane of having a little help in the anti-ageing department.
©The morning after! Shane Warne didn't look like he was recovering from a hangover today while strolling around London
©Making a statement: Elizabeth opted for an animal-print gown which featured a long trailing train
One fan took to Twitter, saying: 'He looks like a waxwork, all plucked and sculptured.'
Another blogger from the social networking site wrote: 'How much surgery has shane warne had? Lol, the male version of jordan!'
However the 41-year-old bowler defended himself, retaliating with: 'Questions re faclift/ Botox etc are absolute rubbish.'
    ©
Home and dry: Liz Hurley wears Shane Warne's dinner jacket as they arrive back at her Chelsea home
©New look: The cricketer has shed his rough and ready image for a more dapper, smooth look
The sportsman is believed to have lost around 22lbs over the last few months, largely due to his girlfriend's influence.
In fact, Shane has now completely changed the way he thinks about food, as he showed on his Twitter page when he asked his followers for advice on what to eat.
He tweeted: 'Feel like a hot pie with copious amounts of sauce with crinkle cut chips!! What the best pie?'
©Stunning: Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie attended the event with their mother Sarah Ferguson
©Hosts for the night: Sir Elton and partner David Furnish pose for photographers inside the party
But Shane then added just minutes later: 'NO Shane!! 78kg is target currently 82.5. Settle on a protein shake with an apple and banana - sob.'
In the fashion stakes Elizabeth stuck to her usual formula in a floor-sweeping animal-print gown.
She admitted to her Twitter followers earlier in the day that she had been struggling to decide what to wear.
She wrote: 'Off to Elton & David's White Tie & Tiara Aids fundraiser. Can't decide which dress......'
Meanwhile, Shane looked sharp in a black tuxedo which highlighted his recent weight loss.
Elizabeth and Shane looked happier than ever as they attended the ball, keeping their arms around each other and smiling for photographers.
And, in a recent interview, Shane said he was looking forward to spending more time with his gorgeous girlfriend.
©Smile, Boris! Becker and wife Sharlely 'Lilly' Kerssenberg arrive at Sir Elton's Windsor home for the annual event
He said: 'She's a lovely lady. We get on really well and I'm spending a lot of time in England this summer, working for Sky.
'We'll wait and see what happens between Liz and I - but at the moment things are great.'
Earlier in the day, Shane was photographed arriving at Elizabeth's London home with a huge grin on his face and carrying a bag of golf clubs.
Elizabeth, 46, announced in December that she had split from husband Arun Nayar, after pictures emerged of her kissing cricketer Shane Warne in a hotel in London.
Following the pictures' publication, both Hurley and Warne hastily issued statements revealing that their respective marriages had been over for some time.
Since then, the new couple have been making headlines for their on/off romance, rendezvous in Australia and India and tabloid rumours of his alleged infidelity.
Elizabeth married Indian textile heir Nayar at Sudely Castle, near Winchcombe, Gloucestershire, in March 2007 - and had a traditional Hindu wedding at Umaid Bhawan Palace in Jodhpur, India.

New love? Glee star Matthew Morrison arrived hand-in-hand with a mystery woman
The ceremonies were attended by numerous celebrities, including Sir Elton John, who gave the bride away.
Announcing her separation from Arun, Liz tweeted: 'Not a great day. For the record, my husband Arun & I separated a few months ago. Our close family & friends were aware of this.'
She added: 'Painful, sad days. Arun & I separated for private reasons but FTR he has been a great father to our son Damian & will always be in his life.'

©Brunettes have more fun: Alexa Chung and Nancy Del'Ollio were among the invited guests

Hours later, Shane, 41, took to his own blog to confirm that his tumultuous marriage to wife Simone was also over.
In a statement he said: 'Sadly and unfortunately, Simone and I split up a while ago, our close friends and family were informed at that time.
'It is a private matter so we did not make it public. We remain friends and will continue to be good parents.'
A notorious philanderer, Shane split from Simone, the mother of his children Brooke, 13, Jackson, 11 and Summer, 8, after a string of affairs, including a notorious sex text scandal in 2000 which saw him stripped of his Australian vice-captaincy.
