  • Another something just for me...

    Another something just for me...
    Summer skirt
A quick and easy summer skirt made up in a "New York" themed print. I am not usually drawn to buying themed fabrics but this one seemed to stand out to me as one that would make a unique skirt. If it had a New Zealand theme or Kiwiana theme I would have steered well clear so if you're from the US I can understand if it's not your cup of tea.
Anyway I'm really pleased with how this skirt came out and how quickly it came together as it took only 2 - 3 hours to whip up. It is quite a flattering style that sits nicely on my hips and therefore not cutting into my waist. The only thing I changed is to make it a little shorter so it comes to my knees.

For a bit of added interest I added some mini blue ric-rac around the bottom edge of the top band and normal sized red ric-rac around the hemline. I used an invisible zipper on the side seam using this tutorial which shows just how easy these zippers are to install. The pattern is  "New Look" no.6595 if you're interested in making this skirt too. Now all I need is a couple of tops or three to go with it!

  • Hot air balloon shirt

    Hot air balloon shirt
Sewing While at Ross today, I found this fluorescent yellow shirt in Kinsley's size in the clearance section. I snagged it cause the neckline was how Kinsley likes them, she is very particular about the necklines on her shirts :) Happily, when I got home with it, she liked how it fit. I suggested that we put something on it, so we ended up with a hot air balloon and some clouds. Kinsley picked out the fabrics for everything. I love how it turned out, and now I want to make me a hot air balloon shirt :)
Edited to add: Do any of you with girls notice that alot of the shirts in the stores now have peace signs and love all over them? I am kindof annoyed at it, that's all. :)

  • Triangle Skirts

    Triangle Skirts
Sewing I was at the thrift store yesterday and bought a package of fabric. Usually when I buy a package of fabric it is just for a couple of pieces in that package. When I opened it up I found this mauvey purple fabric and thought, that would make some cute skirts. Kinsley didn't want a skirt, so I made them for Jade and Sage. I have had this idea to put triangles on a skirt like this for about a year now, I don't know why it took me so long to actually do it. I was so excited when I got them finished last night, the girls were asleep, so I had to wait until this morning to see them on, I love them! And more importantly my girls love them! So stinkin cute if I do say so myself :)

  • A dress for Sage

    A dress for Sage
Sewing Instead of starting a batch of pillowcase dresses this morning, I made this dress :)
I altered a pattern I had so that it would work how I wanted it to.

    Sewing
It was quick and easy which is my kind of project. I think it turned out so cute! I love the contrast of the mustard colored fabric to the green binding and the turquoise flower.
I've felt a bit in a crafting funk lately. I haven't felt like starting large batches of things so this dress was a perfect thing to do this morning. I'm just hoping this crafting funk goes away soon, I have shows coming up!

  • Patchwork skirt love

    Patchwork skirt love
    Sewing
I haven't been able to stop thinking about this skirt tutorial from the Moda Bake shop.

    Sewing
    So I made one.

    Sewing
And then had my 7 and 5 year old take pictures for me. I think they did pretty good.

    Sewing
There was a few things I did differently from the tutorial. First, it called for a layer cake and a jelly roll which I did not have, so instead I picked 25 different fabrics from my stash which made it easy because I needed 25- 10 inch squares and 25- 2 1/2 inch strips. Another thing I did differently was I didn't make the waistband, I just folded down the top of the skirt to make the waistband. Also, if I make another one of these (which I probably will) I will serge all my pieces together. I just sewed everything together without thinking about the raw edges. (so now I will have a lovely stringy mess under there, oh well!) If I would have used a layer cake and a jelly roll they would have already had pinked edges.

And I have to say that I LOVE THIS SKIRT!
  • Candy dish quilt top!

    Candy dish quilt top!
    Sewing
I got my top for Dana's quilt along done! Dana said it looks like a dish full of candy, which it does, so now this quilt has a name! Luckily it stopped raining long enough to take a picture outside.

And look at my cute new shoes! 9 bucks at Ross, gotta love it!
  • Tank top remake

    Tank top remake
    Sewing
I ran across the idea for this on Wild Olive, and had to try it for myself.
Seriously easy, all I did was cut the tank top up the front in the middle, you could just leave it like that and it would be cute. I decided I wanted to add ruffles, so I measured how long the edge I just cut was (mine was 21") and I multiplied that number by 1 1/2 and added a few more inches, so I cut two pieces of fabric that were 2 1/4" wide by 35" long, then I serged the long edges, sewed a basting stitch down the middle and gathered it up, (here's a video on you tube that shows you how to make a gather) and sewed it on, turning under the short edges sewing those down. If you don't have a serger, you could zig zag the edges, or even leave them and they will fray a bit, which would be cool too. Hopefully that made sense, it really is easy.

  • Flower shirts

    Flower shirts
SewingThis was a great project for my girl's Easter baskets, I embellished all three of these shirts in less than an hour, I love projects like that :) Luckily I had purchased these shirts awhile ago so I already had everything I needed for them. I even used some of my favorite vintage buttons, I don't know why i have such a hard time using them.
    Sewing
My girl's Easter baskets are seeming to have color themes this year. Kinsley's is blue, Jade's is pink, and Sage's is green. Tomorrow night I am making them ruffly aprons. Then I think I will be all ready for Easter.
But the real question is am I going to be ready for all of my 8 shows coming up? I'm starting to feel the pressure and thinking what have I got myself into!!?
I will probably be fine, I just tend to freak out :)
  • Easter dress #3

    Easter dress #3
    Sewing
The third and final Easter dress, yay I'm done! This one is for my youngest Sage. She tells me she doesn't like it, but she often changes her mind, we'll see. They all get to wear them tonight, my mother-in-law is having pictures taken of them, we even bought flip-flops to match yesterday, hooray for $2.50 flip flops at Old Navy!
  • Easter Dress #2

    Easter Dress #2
    Sewing
This dress is for my oldest Kinsley. Again I started with a thrifted slip and added vintage lace and ribbons and colorful doilies. A ruffle at the bottom for extra length and another ruffle on the front, a little different from the first dress, but I tried to make as much the same as possible, so there's no "Mom, why is her dress cuter than mine?"
I am smitten with these slip dresses.
